Participating in this project allowed me to pay tribute to Maria Isabel’s enduring legacy. Her story is a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have, and I sought to honor her through my art.
The “Duna Kara na Maria Isabel Gómez” project has not only illuminated the life of a remarkable woman but has also courageously confronted the deliberate omissions and erasures that have plagued our historical narratives. For far too long, the contributions of women, especially those of mixed heritage like Maria Isabel Gómez, have been systematically concealed, their stories buried beneath layers of prejudice and neglect.
This initiative boldly challenges the historical status quo, unearthing the hidden truths that historians and societal gatekeepers have often suppressed. By bringing Maria Isabel’s story to light, the project exposes the profound impact she had on her son, General Manuel Piar, and the broader fight against colonialism and oppression.
