Ashley Mauricia, also known as “Holly” or Hòliwut di ARTE, is a celebrated artist from Curaçao, recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to the island’s art scene. Born in 1961, he pursued formal art training at the prestigious Escuela de Artes Plásticas Cristóbal Rojas in Venezuela and later specialized in painting and sculpture at the Universidad de los Andes in Mérida. Since returning to Curaçao in 1991, Ashley has been a driving force in promoting art and cultural expression within the local community.
One of his notable achievements is his work at the Sea Aquarium Curaçao, where he created stunning aquatic-themed murals that continue to captivate audiences. He is also widely known for spearheading Curaçao World’s Longest Painting, a massive community project in 2013 that involved local and international artists. The 2-kilometer-long painting, created to commemorate the abolition of slavery, stands as a powerful symbol of freedom, artistic collaboration, and unity. Sections of this monumental work remain treasured cultural artifacts in Curaçao.
Ashley’s passion for art extends to education and mentorship. He teaches at VSBO schools and manages E-Studio di Arte in Punda, where he provides workshops and artist residencies. His studio serves as a hub for nurturing talent and fostering creative exchange. Ashley’s works often draw inspiration from Curaçao’s rich natural and cultural heritage, with his iconic flamingo sculptures—crafted from coral and steel—featured prominently in the Blue Bay Sculpture Garden.
Beyond visual arts, Ashley has explored the performing arts. In collaboration with Leo Martis, a renowned guitarist and composer, he formed the entertainment duo KOMA. Together, they presented the theatrical project Den Bahul di Nos Pasado (From the Chest of Our Past), which celebrated Curaçao’s history and cultural identity through a mix of music, storytelling, and visual art.
Ashley Mauricia’s career is a testament to his ability to seamlessly blend artistic creativity, cultural heritage, and social engagement, solidifying his status as a pivotal figure in Curaçao’s artistic and cultural landscape.
